Height 5". Width 15". Depth 10.25".
Notes:
This piece is nearly identical and undoubtedly by the same hand as one in the New Bedford Whaling Museum Collection, ex-collection Kendall Whaling Museum, accession number 2001.100.2122, illustrated in Ingenious Contrivances, Curiously Carved by Stuart M. Frank (Boston: David R. Godine, 2012), p. 237, fig. 11.42. Frank notes the illustrated example was made aboard the New Bedford whaleship
Claris circa 1836-1838 for Jane Ann Clark (1829-1844), Captain Benjamin Clark's daughter, the work attributed to Clark himself.

In Scrimshaw and Provenance: A Third Dictionary of Scrimshaw Artists (Mystic, Ct.: Stuart M. Frank and Mystic Seaport Museum, 2013), p. 54-55, Frank writes Benjamin Clark (1793-1881) was originally from Bridgewater, Massachusetts and married Jane Ann Smith of Edgartown. In addition to their daughter, the couple also had a son, Benjamin Smith Clark, who went on to become a whaling master as well. This box could possibly have been made for the son, or for another Smith relative.
