Focus on specialisation in an interesting environment
Braunschweig is an attractive research region and studying here means you are at the cutting edge of science. Our close ties with TU research centres such as the Automotive Research Centre Niedersachsen(NFF), the Aeronautics Research Centre Niedersachsen(NFL) and the Center of Pharmaceutical Engineering(PVZ) promote practical teaching and give you the opportunity to establish business contacts. You can get additional insights into the latest scientific research thanks to our various cooperation partners such as the German Aerospace Center (DLR) or the Physikalisch-TechnischeBundesanstalt (PTB), National Metrology Institute. Options over obligations
In the Master’s programme, students take a few compulsory courses. These build on the basics of the Bachelor's programme and are the foundation for the further content of the programme. The majority of the Master’s programme, however, consists of courses that students choose according to their own interests. Thanks to a variety of elective courses, each student develops a personal profile and finds their own specialisation.
From additive manufacturing to self-synchronisation
How can we use materials to save resources and protect the environment? What production technology and mechatronic solutions pave the way for Industry 4.0? Which innovative processes do we need and how can we further develop and use AI processes and big data management in a transdisciplinary way for mechanical engineering? Content and structure of the study programme
Core modules
You can choose from a limited selection of core modules. These modules, which are either mandatory or may be selected out of a few options, are important cornerstones for the Master’s programme in Mechanical Engineering.
Specialisation modules
We offer a list of compulsory elective subjects. Here you can freely combine any available modules. The catalogue includes a large selection of modules for you to set your own individual focus within the study programme.
Laboratory modules

Elective modules
You can choose from a list of elective modules from different fields of technology, from which you must select three modules. As this catalogue covers a very broad area of subjects, you can either explore your area of specialisationin more depth or acquire knowledge from other fields of technology to complement what you have learnt.
Interdisciplinary specialisation
In our modules for interdisciplinary specialisation, you will acquire methodological and social skills. We offer modules with interdisciplinary and action-oriented courses in which you can acquire additional qualifications and competencies. This way, you get the opportunity to think outside the box during your studies and to underpin your specialised knowledge with important additional qualifications for your professional life. You can also take language courses as part of interdisciplinary specialisation.
Student research project
The goal of the student research project is to promote your ability to work on a scientific basis. In addition to the subject-related work, you will acquire and strengthen your rhetorical skills when presenting the findings of your work. You will also practise your scientific writing skills when working on your project, which will help you to prepare for your Master’s thesis.
Master's thesis
The degree programme is completed by writing a Master's thesis over a period of six months, which consists of both a written elaboration and an oral presentation of your findings. With your Master’s thesis, you demonstrate that you are capable of writing a scientific paper on your own.
Stay abroad
Those who have gained experience abroad and speak a foreign language are particularly sought after by the economy. Today, large companies operate globally, research projects are carried out in international teams and specialised literature is written in English. It is therefore important that you take advantage of your studies to gain experience abroad and to professionalise your foreign language skills.
