Grain and soybeans rose strongly early in the session after the Agriculture Department reported surpnsingly strong export sales. The USDA said 540.300 tons of soybeans were exported in the past week. That beat the four-week average by 25 percent and was sharply higher than market expectations.

Japan, Spam and the Netherlands were major purchasers. The National Oilseed Processors Association also reported the amount of soybeans crushed into meal and oil rose by 464.000 bushels in the past week to 32.897 million bushels. But the rally faded after the industry association revised downward its amount of soybean meal exports. The USDA reported weekly com export sales of 878,100 tons, with Japan, South Korea and Mexico the top three buyers. The figure, some 300.000 tons higher than expectations, helped Overcome concern that export demand will plunge amid Asian economic turmoil.

But the soybeans' weakness pressured com prices. Wheat futures rose after the government said 688.300 tons of wheat were exported last week, slightly above expectations. Gram and soybeans also were supported early by a private forecaster's prediction that the El Nino weather effect will cause above-normal precipitation this spring and a ho tter-than -normal summer in maior U.S. growing regions. Such weather could affect production significantly.

Wheat for March delivery rose 3 14 cents to $3.34 14 a bushel: March com fell 12 cent to $2.75 12 a bushel; March oats fell 2 12 cerits to $1 47 34 a bushel; March soybeans fett 34 cents to $6.70 14 a bushel. Meat and livestock futures rose strongly on the Chcago Mercantile Exchange. February live cattle rose 80 cent to 66.70 cents a pound; March feeder cattle rose 110 cent to 79 05 cents a pound; February lean hogs rose .35 cent to 58 85 cents a pound; February pork bellies rose 1 .02 cents to 50 30 cents a pound.
